I work with the Internet Archive, and I would like to shed some light on the book scanning job. This job is not for everyone, it takes a level of zen. While the page turning itself is repetitive, since each book is different, there is a great deal of variation on book handling and in cataloging.
It takes concentration and a love of books. For those that love working with books and libraries, it fits well.
We employ about 70 scanners in the US, UK, and Canada scanners where they average over $15/hour and get benefits. Most have been with us for years. Most are college graduates, and come from the University we are scanning in.
Eliza, for instance, has been with the Internet Archive scanning in our San Francisco headquarters for years. She has scanned LP's, CD's, books, government documents, local newspapers, maps, you name it.
There are many volunteers that go through the training so they can scan books of interest to them, for instance family histories to genealogists.
The scanners have pride in what they do, and they can find the books they have scanned online. For instance, this book about the Japanese American experience is one of the thousands of books that Eliza has scanned over the years.
