The earth.com article refers to a paper from 2020. I read the paper. The headline misrepresents it in almost every way.
It's a 59-year field study comparing natural biological soil crust (BSC) development against plots inoculated with native cyanobacteria in two Chinese deserts. The inoculation work started in 2002. Not a new invention.
The real finding: Cyanobacterial inoculation compresses a natural succession process that normally takes 50+ years down to roughly 10–13 years. Induced plots aged 13 years showed similar community structure and nutrient levels to natural plots aged 34 years. That's a impressiive finding- a 3-5x acceleration of ecosystem recovery driven by microbial inoculation.
"Fertile soil in 10 months" doesn't appear in the paper. Initial crust formation is fast, but nutrient levels in 13-year-old induced plots are still extremely low by any agricultural standard. The endpoint after 59 years of natural succession is sparse moss and a few vascular plants — not cropland.
The most interesting detail: The inoculated strain didn't even persist. It was replaced through natural succession by a better climate-adapted genus. The inoculation triggered the process; the ecosystem self-organized from there.
The sobering context the headline buries: Large-scale afforestation in China has largely failed because it exceeds the water-carrying capacity of arid systems. Moss BSC with sparse plants is the realistic ecological ceiling. The paper is as much an argument for managing expectations about dryland restoration as it is a proof of concept for cyanobacterial inoculation.
Still worth reading. Just not what the headline says. And why did they post a news article about a 6 year old publication?

#4 ¿Y por qué van a dejar de trabajar en negro? Ni que no hubiese ya mucha gente española o con papeles que trabaja en negro o con condiciones laborales semi esclavistas. Que si, algunos ahora lo tendrán más fácil. para encontrar otros trabajos o poder exigir mejores condiciones, pero muchos otros seguirán con condiciones de mierda. Por no decir que inmigrantes sin papeles no paran de llegar, así que si comienzas a exigir el jefe le dirá que prefiere al nuevo sin papeles.
