The global pharmaceutical industry is being called on to pay for a $2bn innovation fund to revitalise research into antibiotics. In Spanish and British English, a billion will be taken as "a million of millions": 1,000,000,000,000.
However, in American English, a billion will be "a thousand millions": 1,000,000,000.
The article mentions a trillion, and here is where it gets tricky. In British will be the same as in Spanish, 1,000,000,000,000,000. Meanwhile, in American English will be just a thousand billions: 1,000,000,000,000.
Please, note how the notation for numbers in English uses a comma as separator for the thousands and a period for decimal i.e. 2,359.54 while in Spanish same amount will be expressed as 2.359,54.
