Entre los años 381 y 384 de nuestra era, una mujer culta y rica de la Gallaecia romana realiza un viaje a Tierra Santa lleno de peligros e incomodidades. El rodaje del documental Egeria, la primera peregrina, que comienza este mes en Jerusalén, trae a la actualidad la figura de un personaje enigmático que dejó por escrito en su Itinerarium ad Loca Sancta las impresiones de esa apasionante aventura, lo que la convierte en la primera escritora española de nombre conocido y una de las primeras mujeres que escribe en latín.

El de Egeria es el primer viaje de sacrificio y peregrinación de la historia. Antes había habido otros viajes literarios o de recreo, pero no de peregrinación
A bote pronto, esto es incorrecto. Los budistas llevaban siglos peregrinando a los lugares sagrados de la India como el lugar de nacimiento de Buda, el parque donde pronunció su primer sermón, el árbol donde alcanzó la iluminación o el lugar donde finalmente murió.

Lumbini, the Birthplace of the Lord Buddha
Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 623 B.C. in the famous gardens of Lumbini, which soon became a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Ashoka, who erected one of his commemorative pillars there.

The earliest reference to Buddhist pilgrimage is found in the Mahāparinibbāna Sutta of the Pāli Canon, and the actual practice began shortly after the Buddha Siddhattha Gotama’s passing away (sometime between 543 BCE and 483 BCE). According to this Pāli text, which details the Buddha’s last three months of life, the Buddha, while on his death bed, stated that making a pilgrimage to four specific places will arouse a devotee’s confidence: Lumbinī, the birth place of the Buddha; Bodhgayā, the seat of his enlightenment; Sārnāth, where he delivered his first discourse that resulted in the listener’s awakening; and Kusinārā, where he passed away. In the twelve centuries that followed, the expansion of Buddhism in India and Asia led to a growing interest in pilgrimage to these four sites.
Será la primera peregrina del cristianismo, porque peregrinos los ha habido muchísimo antes en otras tradiciones. Y a cientos de miles.
