What differences are there between the ALBA synchrotron and the LHC in Geneva?

The accelerator in Geneva is designed to study distances on the order of 10^-17 meters, distances much smaller than the nucleus of an atom. They aim to generate large concentrations of energy in order to create new particles, reproduce the high-temperature conditions found at the origins of the universe, etc. We want to provide synchrotron light for researchers that study larger structures, on an atomic or molecular scale. Therefore, the aims of the two synchrotrons are completely different.

What advantages does ALBA have versus other existing international accelerators?

ALBA has the same power as the new synchrotron in the UK, Diamond; a bit more than the SLS in Switzerland or the SOLEIL in France, and we are number one in emittance (the characteristic of light that defines the quality of experiments that can be carried out).

How much does it cost to run the synchrotron per year?

"La última vez que España pagó su contribución al CERN fue en Diciembre de 2011 (pago con un año de retraso) y en 2012 sólo pagó el 25% de la cuota que le tocaba, dejando una deuda de 50 millones de euros. Para 2013 le toca pagar 75 millones de euros, aunque los presupuestos españoles contemplan sólo pagar 50 millones de euros (pequeño recorte de la cuota por la cara sin consenso con el resto de países) y en teoría si en 2013 no paga la cuota que le corresponde y la deuda acumulada verá como se le revocan sus derechos de voto en el CERN".

"Spain, which had a €55m debt with CERN at the turn of this year, still has to pay some €36m of its 2012 quota. That figure is likely to increase again in 2013 as the country will owe the Geneva lab €76.5m but has earmarked just €51m for CERN membership. “It seems difficult to me for CERN’s council to accept Spain’s deficit, because an infraction to the treaty by one member state would create a very dangerous precedent that may ruin the institution, if other states imitate it,” says Matteo Cavalli Sforza, director of Barcelona’s Institute for High Energy Physics.
CERN is not the only body to be affected by Spain’s science cuts. The country also owes some €164m to the European Space Agency (ESA), according to press reports, although nobody at the industry ministry was available to confirm this number to Physics World. However, in the last ESA ministerial council meeting in November 2012, the Spanish government was allowed to cut its participation in optional projects such as Earth observation, telecommunications, satellite navigation, and space transportation by 75%. Meanwhile, at the ILL in Grenoble, director Andrew Harrison says that Spain has requested a reduction in its contribution for 2013, which will now be €5m."

Como ya está construido ya no interesa a España.

Es un sinsentido invertir el el Alba y dejar de invertir en el Cern, donde hay mucho que aprender para usarlo después en el Alba.
