Medical practitioners of the time argued that the human eye was not designed to process images at such high velocities. Their specific concerns included:
• Visual Fatigue: Doctors warned that the retina was being "severely tried" because it was forced to focus and refocus on objects whipping past the window.
• Brain Overload: It was believed that the brain had to process these "rapid impressions" at a rate that could lead to "congestion of the brain," dizziness, or even temporary functional blindness.
• The Reading Danger: The Lancet explicitly warned against reading while on a moving train. They believed the combination of the carriage's vibration and the speed of the scenery outside would cause permanent damage to the optic nerve.
