However, if you're trying to install anything without using Synaptic, well forget it. As a test, I downloaded gDesklets and then tried to install it manually without using synaptic. Ubuntu doesn't have an installer wizard like Windows and the unzipped file can't just be thrown into your application folder like OS X. No, you have to use Terminal in order to set it up. The effort was largely fruitless. The closest I got to getting gDesklets to install was when it actually started to unpack and install the file (with Terminal's usual cringe-inducing rapid flow of non-sensical words) when it gave me an error message and stopped. Defeated I installed gDesklets from Synaptic. Synaptic is fine if the program you want is listed, but I have trouble believing that every program I'll ever need is listed in synaptic. This is a real problem.

Si no sabes instalar un programa desde la consola, es tu problema, normalmente es porque no leemos los archivos de texto README o INSTALL que suelen venir con el software que descargamos.

Cuanto miedo tiene la gente al uso del terminal. No muerde.

El otro día me dijeron lo mismo a mi en dos comentarios, y les llamé generación null dado que por lo que se ve mucha gente no sabe vivir sin kde que para mi gusto chupa muchísima memoria, tendrán que llegar a optimizarlo algún día, o si no caerán en el mismo error que M$ y cada vez se necesitarán más recursos y requisitos cuando realmente la potencia de linux radica en la consola.

No voy a decir que no me alegre de lo que hay hoy en día y de la evolución tan buena que ha tenido finalmente todo el proyecto, sin embargo desde 1995 ya existían diferentes distribuciones linux y bsd que permitían hacer muchas cosas, pero se ve que donde no hay no abunda..., por suerte no todo en este mundo tiene que ser Ubuntu...

como odio que digan "ubuntu esto ubuntu lo otro y bla bla" y en realidad estan hablando de cosas comunes en cualquier distribucion linux o bsd

pero de todo lo que dice me quedo con "Synaptic is superior in terms of downloading freeware apps", vaya perla
