A few years ago, I lived with a family that were friends of David Prowse (they knew each other through mutual acquaintances). Occasionally, he would come and stay at our house when he was in the states doing conventions, speeches, etc. He'd normally stay with us for about 3 or 4 days at a time, maybe once a year. This happened three times while I lived with the family.
Words cannot describe how absolutely full of himself this man is. Incredibly demanding to the point of narcissism. He made open unwanted advances on the mother of the family (she was married). He would constantly criticize pretty much anything his eyes could see. He literally threw a fit one time because he had to wait 20 minutes in the airport for us to get him.
When the family finally woke up to how the dude was a bigger dick than Vader ever was, they politely told him that they wouldn't be able to offer their household anymore. He went apeshit! Numerous harassing phone calls, emails, etc. I cannot definitely say what happened in the end- I moved out before it was all over- but I was told legal action had to be taken against him before he finally stopped. (I don't wanna go into specifics, I'm not looking to get sued by some overzealous lawyer for slander or some shit- hence the throwaway account. I didn't witness that specific drama with my own eyes, so I cannot say for sure if it happened.)
I had only a few face-to-face conversations with Mr. Prowse, and each one left me with the feeling that he was just an ego-centric dickhead. I asked him about his experience with Kubrick (Prowse is the huge dude who carries the wheelchair-bound author in A Clockwork Orange), and he said "I didn't fucking care". Really kinda depressing, to be honest- I'm a massive Star Wars fan.
Peter Mayhew, on the other hand, is a true gentleman and an all-around awesome motherfucker. I've hung with him a few times in the course of the David Prowse shit, and I can attest that he loves his fans. Don't know him personally but have seen enough to be convinced.

Nah, he's a dick. I've met him at several parties at conventions and away, and he's a dick.
I would say that I've met the guy, but it was more like I was in the same general vicinity as he was. This was at a convention. He sat there glowering, didn't bother engaging ANYONE on any level whatsoever (I can't recall him answering any questions posed to him) and demanded $25 to sign merchandise that you'd already bought and paid for and brought along with you. He didn't mingle, he didn't act like anything other than a guy thinking to himself "What the fuck do I need to bother with these people for? I'm Darth Vader!". To contrast, at the same convention, Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) was wandering around the crowd, talking to people, generally being a nice guy and trying his hardest not to hit people in the face with his knees (motherfucker is TALL).
From all I can tell, Prowse is a douchenozzle. It doesn't matter to me that he was in the suit for one of the most awesome characters in sci-fi ever. To me, that doesn't count for shit if you're not going to be personable and treat your fans like people - especially if they're doing you the favour of not freaking out, not wetting themselves and not drooling all over you in fanboy lust overload.
James Earl Jones IS Darth Vader. David Prowse was just a rude prick in a suit.
I met David Prowse at a convention. His autograph was $25. He signs it "David Prowse IS Darth Vader". If you wanted him to leave off the Darth Vader bit, and just sign his name, it was an extra $10.
Not saying either one is right or wrong, just that it depends on a certain point of view.
This story is absolutely true:

On Star Wars I didn't have any stuntmen or anything like this, I did all the fighting with Sir Alec Guiness myself. But then on the second one (The Empire Strikes Back) I did most of the fighting with Luke (Mark Hamill), but when it started to get dangerous they brought in a stuntman for me.
